Baked potatoes & Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas (Celebration #5)

First a health update: I spent most of today at Urgent Care, getting poked and prodded and examined. It turned out to be a good thing that I didn't try to go after work (and instead just stayed home again), because I was there for seriously over 4 hours while they did all sorts of stuff to me. The good news is that there isn't any particularly bad news; it looks like I probably have a mild kidney infection. Now that I think about it, the primary symptoms (fatigue, dizziness, just feeling "wrong") line up pretty closely to the ones I had with the kidney infection I had during my last pregnancy. Soooo I came home with a bunch of antibiotics to hopefully head it off at the pass before we get to the super high fever/chills/delirium/week in the hospital phase like we did last time.

Whew. Are you tired after reading that? I am! We had to have some sort of low key celebration tonight. So I pulled out one of my lazier celebration ideas and watched a movie with the Emperor that I've wanted to rewatch for years: Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas.

What's weird is that I think I only ever saw it once as a kid, but I've wanted to see it again for years and years. When YouTube was still pretty new, I scoured it hard to see if Emmett Otter would show up there. I looked for it on BitTorrents periodically for a while. Then I totally forgot about it... and now it turns out you can stream it from Netflix. Success!

Hm. I found it... weird. It's not really a Christmas movie per se. Most of the songs in it are not really very great and the muppets aren't that cute or noteworthy. Sadly, not as good as I remembered and I'm a little let down over the whole thing.

The Emperor liked it but I don't think he loooved it either. Alas. Well, not every celebration can be as high octane as yesterday's...

Baked potato et al

We had a low key dinner as well. I baked some potatoes, Josh made cheezy sauce and steamed some broccoli for us. The Emperor helped make the sauce and was really interested in it at the time and kept telling Josh that it was going to be really yummy. Then, of course, when it was time to eat, he was like NOOOOO NOOOOOOO NOOOOO CHEEZY SAUCE!!!!! Oh well. He ate a huge pile of broccoli (though he made me swap out my florets for his stems; stems are "not yummy") and all of the skin off of a potato and a half. This is why we give him a vitamin, people.

Here he is helping make sauce:

I *loved* the Emmett Otter's Jugband Christmas too!! :) What a bummer that it was such a let down. This is why I try my best not to visit movies from the childhood. I wanna remember them in a positive light because I know that when I see them as an adult, I will be completely disappointed in my taste. hehe

Part of my reason for having a kid was having an excuse/an accomplice to re-watch dumb movies I liked as a child! Most of the time, I still love them but Emmett Otter just didn't stand the test of the time.

We watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas just before December started (cheating & celebrating a little early...) and it's still so good even through adult eyes. I should have saved it for the actual month because now I can't blog about it... unless we watch it again... hmmm...

I've never heard of Emmett Otter, but it looks cute at least. My favorite obscure childhood Christmas movie is Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey, and I do still love it even though it's basically a claymation religious version of Rudolph. The baked potato dinner looks perfect!
